Our progams
As a result of over a decade of partnerships throughout the world, we are fortunate to have had the ability to create cultural exchange programs between our U.S. based students and students from countries such as Dominica, Brazil, Bangladesh, India, Uganda, and more.
The common ground at the foundation of these exchanges has been a love for sports and an appreciation for active citizenship. As we expand our programming and partnerships, we look forward to the new places we will be able to connect with.
Our exchange partnerships are connections with similar organizations who want to create youth leaders. We have found great success with two forms or partnerships.
One is a virtual model with an end result of an action-based project, and another is a two-way travel exchange model. Both are equally beneficial to all participating members and their communities.
Our virtual model is a long-term collaboration with one of our KidzPlay4Free Partner organizations. We set up a cohort of students from each country to participate in a tiered program which involves virtual meetings, digital communication, and the use of social media platforms to explore one another’s cultures and to design a project in conjunction with one another’s organizations.
Our coaches and leaders help facilitate these meetings and communications to steer the group in a productive manner, while also ensuring their autonomy and ability to practice their leadership skills.
At the end of our virtual exchange programs, we have two groups of students who have expanded their world view, who have explored their similarities and differences, who have discussed one another’s community issues and areas of concern, and who have then created a project, movement, or some other tangible way to better our partner organization and their surrounding communities.
As a result of this, our U.S. based students gain a vast knowledge of another culture and create a global connection with others. Both groups, however, ultimately gain invaluable skills to learn how to identify community needs and then to enact change.
The two-way travel model is different in the sense that although there is still a virtual component to allow groups to initially meet, get to know each other, and design action based projects and sports education programs, we are able to work with one another on two occasions- one here in the United States and one in our partner’s country.
We will host our partner program’s for 1-2 weeks here in the United States and provide opportunities to explore the education system, to attend and participate in sporting and leadership events, and to learn about our culture.
We will then compile our group of U.S. based student ambassadors and travel to the partner program’s community to do the same. However, one slight addition is that we will inquire from their students and leaders about projects or focus areas we may be able to assist in, and our youth ambassadors will collect the necessary equipment and supplies needed to help create these desired outcomes on our exchange.
Any student who wishes to participate in either a virtual or two-way exchange must complete our UKSD Ambassador training program, demonstrate commitment to the cultural education requirements, and possess leadership potential and a desire for growth.
Like all of our programming, we find it necessary to create an even playing field and give students of various skills and abilities the opportunity to join us. We also work diligently to ensure that these exchanges are financially reasonable or even free when possible. We can also work with students to help them create a plan to raise funds or obtain sponsorships.
Lastly, these types of exchanges must be rooted in sustainability, in order to be considered successful. Each group must maintain the belief that neither of us is entering another’s country or community to be a savior or change a way of life, but rather that we are going to learn from one another and share our knowledge and expertise in order to provide a long lasting impact.
It is also important that we partner with organizations that we can work with on a consistent basis and grow together in our efforts to improve the lives of the kids we work with through sport.
